The Galaxy Magician was my first low trainer from back in the eighties. So what better way to get back into the hobby than build another one!

A low wing 54” 4 channel trainer with a different look. SC52 Four Stroke.

U/C has been modified to use wing blocks - See photos.

Maiden flight was on 23 March 2010, in a stiff gusty breeze, overcast & about 13ºC. Trim was near but left aileron and a fair bit of up elevator.

Throws: Rudder 1” each way, Elevator 1/4” & 1/8” each way, Aileron  3/16”  3/32” each way.

Rates were not used and full movement was needed, I shall increase the throws a bit.

The SC52FS is turning a 12x6 at 9500rpm. Now using Southern Model Craft Laser Mix with 5% Nitro. The engine is so much happier, & so am I!!

I think the Magician may be a tad nose heavy but will leave as it is for time being!     The new U/C position was well worth the effort.

AUW (no fuel) < 5lb  2.268 Kg

All in all so far I am well pleased, thank you Galaxy.

27th March - Throws adjusted to give 3/8 each way on aileron and 1/4 on elevator.Rates set to give half throw. Neutrals now reset.

July 2010 - I find the model is fast on landing unless there is a 5 -10 mph wind blowing, apart from that I’m very happy with the Magician. Having read the review in the 50th Anv RCM&E, I would agree the instructions are bad and the plan is not to clear in places, good job I’ve built one before back in the 80’s. I had no trouble fitting the gear in and I used a single servo on the wing. For the throttle, Ail & Elv servos, I inset them into the foam turtle deck.

FOR A LOW WING TRAINER THE MAGICIAN IS IDEAL with a 40 2 Stroke or 52FS, I dare say it could be converted to electric

UPDATE on Throws

Aileron ½” each way     ¼” on rates (takeoff & landing use rates)

Elevator ½” each way - no rates

Rudder 1” each way – no rates

Oct 2010

Cowl has cracked around screw holes, will ½” glass cloth thin super glue reinforce it. This will add more weight so a small piece of lead under the tail wheel bracket will sort that out.

I still think it will be under 5lb.
